The conference organised by Berkeley Law CLEE on 29 April was aimed at Alps as the battery of Europe and how important the placement of these mountains in the water cycle is. We could learn more about white coal – a substance that flows from the mountains (Alps), the source is specifically snow. This melted water is then taken by the pipes and turbines to the power station, where the energy is produced.

In the 1909 this alpine waterpower was also important for industrial wealth. Nowadays - in winter, the water in the mountains is running low, which means there is less energy produced. That is why the storage of water in Alps is important and that is why people build a lot of dams and reservoirs. In the end, they talked about the future and if there is a possibility of increasing of hydropower. With global warming there comes melting of glaciers and reduction of storage capacity. We can try to prevent this global warming by stopping subsidizing fossil fuels and building more dams to make sure we still have some water storage. On the other hand, we also have to reconsider the disadvantages of hydropower.
